South India

Australian diplomat Walter Crocker in his biography of Jawaharlal Nehru, published in 1966 observed that "south India has counted for too little in the Indian Republic. This is a waste for India as well as an unfairness to south India, because the south has a superiority in certain important things—its relative lack of violence, its lack of anti-Muslim intolerance, its lack of indiscipline and delinquency in the universities; in its better educational standards, its better government, and its cleanliness; in its far lesser practice of corruption and its little taste for Hindu revivalism. If the English language is to be saved to India as a living language it is the south that will save it".

Chakorange Chandrama - My version

I do not have access to lyrics. Because I know little bit of Kannada, I find following mixtakes. There could be more. Feel free to correct. It is not hard to note I am off here and there and at the end notably where I was confused and ended up in bring a different dhati. At least it was not what I wanted. Rhythm is off here and there too. Overall not bad. I kinda got a good kick out of this.

How larynx produces sound

At high pitch we may fail to hold the cords closer together possibly due to lack of power in muscles of larynx, the voices cracks. Cracking is nothing but cords failing to open and close smoothly start jerking causing sudden discontinuity in frequency introducing noise. I think.

Not taking is better than giving!

I was asked a question in an informal coffee meet.
"Let us ask Ragu."
"What do developing countries expect from developed countries?"

"Nothing" I said, "They would be much happier if developed countries stopped taking from them, first."

There was an expected silence. Some thought I was not saying anything relevant; their body language made it apparent. Some others did not understand what I was saying.

I gave a few hints, "Coke companies are buying rivers in India. This is when our people do not have clean drinking water."
African countries or their so called governments "sell" wood and other raw materials for peanuts. If that is not taking what else is?

Asteya (अस्तेय) is one of the disciplines prescribed for those who want to live a decent life. Not taking is much better than giving: it eliminates the need for donations.

Prosody, GOD and me ;)


The tittle does not really mean anything. Here are flashes for the day:

I do not know how English poems and their prosody is studied. But I see that it is very hard job. Hard because the writing does not have enough information to judge how that will be sung. It is another matter that a poem can be sung in different ways or not sung at all. Then when writing the author must have some idea on how the poems rhythm structure is going to be. I do not call anything that does not have a regular pattern of rhythms inherent, a poem. It is a waste of time in the name of writing poem. It is another matter that we lose rhythms but that is not a reason for not having one at all. Anyway, I realised this tough task of classifying English poems because in Kannada we can enumerate syllables and understand the structure of the poem. When we read an English poem we can get a sense of it following a pattern but how exactly that is quantified is for those who know more to answer. Do not tell me we use syllabic markers or something I will have to go figure out what the hell that is.

At the same time, I saw how passionate the Pastor of the church was while preaching after the prayers where I spent some time thinking about prosody of the lyrics and enjoyed the amazing music. The preaching was about "Burial of Jesus". I know about 'religious emotions' but what surprised me is this infliction that we as a humans have: 'obsession about one thing of person'. Scores of temples and mosques included preaching about GOD: Rama, Jesus, and Allah. Everywhere they read a 'scripture'. Same story is repeated. It is a sheer waste of human energy to bite the dust of the 'scriptures' until we die. It is an unforgivable disease which must stop. Not only because it is our weakness but also because it steals away the time we need to spend on introspection and invent. To settle the scores and disputes is one and to DO something is another. I am a religious man. It however is my own business and to me it is about how much it can help me in civilizing me.

I was looking for a Bhagavad-Gita book that only explains the philosophy and not throw up the melodrama and out dated aesthetics of the spent millenniums! I could not find one. Let me know if you know such a book. I would like to read it. If I do not find one I will have to write one I guess! But then I will need to understand the philosophy of xyzYoga. That could be quite a bit for this bone head. From what I have read there appears to be a lot of additions made later on. Some parts are mystic blurring the real thing. Is every word in it right! Hell no! If there is GOD she is neither limited nor handicapped to only whisper some people and let others fight about it. But some people who push their own agenda do exist. I better be more carefull about them than about GOD.

A religion called government

Yes! This is a new religion! If you do not know this religion then well you already follow this religion: your government. I will try to explain this in the post.

Religions prescribe, inculcate and sometimes force things because "they" or "some" or an "enlightened one" "realised" that they are good for everyone. Look what the governments are doing! A board in the first floor (ground) of my apartment building read "The laundry room door must be kept closed after 10 PM - By law". Now, they tell me when I should close the door!! Haven't we heard them (Govt ; whatever it means) say things like, "wear helmet", "do not smoke in public" etc? But that is in public not at home. In a few years they will tell me when to sleep, if left to themselves. Because a study finds out that sleeping late increases the health cost for the government by 99% (say!)! They already tell us where to urinate (public toilets) wait for a while they are "thinking" they will tell you when to urinate as well. Then we need to take an appointment to take approval from a clerk to find out when not to urinate. I know I am exaggerating but just show how ridiculous things can get easily by applying "public safety" policies. This is what governments do.

This is too much government. Too much!! When a government becomes too much it becomes a religion! Simple. Wait a second who said religion is simple?

Folks, life is all folk!

Hi folks,
I made an inflammatory post a while ago. People of all sexes and religion fumed at me reading it :) Now I write to correct myself a bit and go a few steps beyond so the fuming can burn and the sniggering can laugh.

Corrections are that Eka tala is a 4 or 8 beat rhythm depending on how fast it is played. Which is exactly same as in Karnataka Sangeetha. I had incorrectly mentioned it 6 beats. which actually ended up a discussion on Eka Tala I counted it wrong! I Also listened Karnataki Ektala and concluded there is no difference between Yakshagana and Karnataki Eka Taala. So that sarcasm I threw at the Karnataki now stands to embarrass me. Since it is not the first time and I have decided to show all my ignorance and shout as much so I do not repent for not saying something after my death (there are high chances of me becoming ghost; I have too many scores to settle)! I call it original ignorance (mistakes in realizations)! I also figured that Yakshagana Rupaka taala and Karnataki Tisra Rupaka are exactly same. In Yakshagana number of continuous strokes (Laghu) and gaps following a stroke (Guru) is decided based on the metre (Chandassu) of poem and  effective metre when singing. Which leads us to believe that Karnataki composers are or should be careful about metre of the composition while choosing a Tala with a particular Jaathi. The problem is the rhythm and the metre both become monotonous by sticking to a Jaathi. I.e Laghu in a Chatusra Jaathi Tala should have  4 laghu letters in corresponding lyric and Guru should have Guru in the lyric (ie a compound letter that takes 2 time units to pronounce or a laghu when sung takes 2 time units). If this pattern is repeated often it is bound to become monotonous. When and if this rule is broken, natural correspondence between rhythm and lyric is replaced by a concocted rhythm pattern to follow the melody. This, only a few trained in this business can understand, because natural correspondence between melody and rhythm is broken at least partly if not completely. This prevents public from following the rhythm. If you follow the correspondence then you are called a folk singer! So much for being normal!! 

Now the going beyond stuff:
Eka taala is basically a typical 4 beat international folk rhythm. You see them in rock, pop, classical, Karnataki, Hindi film songs etc. A lot of folk songs are in Eka Taala rhythm. Irrespective of how many beats it has, Eka Tala appears to have only one emphatic stroke so called Eka taala? May be who knows!

Chande is tuned well this time for a change but my voice is not!


All musics are folk in origin including Karnatic/Carnatic whatever you call it. Refinements aside fundamentals are very natural. In my view artificial arithmetical rhythm patterns should not be created. They will end up unatural and not so nice circus! So I started to see if I can add new rhythms patterns by looking at natural sounds. Dollu Kunita (Drum Dance) of Karnataka has a nice rhythm. It goes something like, Drijom Dallom ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and then DrijjukuDrijom DrijjukuDrijom DrijjukuDrijom Drijom. Unfortunately for me this is already a variation of Kore Taala (3.5 beats). In fact the Yakshagana Oddolaga starts with a typical this Dollu beat (Tai taita dina dhem taita dina dhen taita dina dhittha...so on)!

Ps: Above statement about Oddolaga are incorrect. Yakshagana Oddolaga is in Asta tala (Ata) of 8 beats.

All 7 rhythm can be shown to be from something (I think!). If you know the rest (5) let me know. So let us keep looking and add new rhythms.

I realised today that Karnataki/Hindustani "Naaninna Dasanaiah Seetharaama...", my mother 's favourite (havyaka traditional/folk) "Bandu kootihalu nodi, Mahalakshmi indu kantheredu nodi..." and Yakshagana Gadhayudha "Swami laalipudu maata are all in same Dhaati (so same raaga) and all in Asta Taala (Ata taala? Tabla Deepchandi). All music is folk so do not complain!.

Ps: Gadaaparva Yakshagana book states the Raaga is Regupti. But Hindusthani Durga.

Being neutral: Being apolitical and not religious

Being neutral is always a joke! I will try to defend this view point in this post.


We often see claims such as spiritual but not religious, not political, non-aligned, neither against nor for! None of them is true. It could be that we have not spent enough time to think about them and therefore we have not decided. It mostly means, unfortunately, that we favour one of the sides and do not admit it being dishonest to the degree required for such claims.

If we are not political we should not care for ANY political ideal. We should not care who rules. How can someone be clueless about someone who rules them? How can someone claim that it does not matter to them if they pay all their money in tax or part of it? Similarly how can someone seriously say that they would not mind someone being coersed into a particular faith, culture etc? How can one tolerate being forced to follow a faith?

If we can not stand these then we are not neutral. If we do tolerate such behaviour we are slaves.

Ramayana I know are actually pieces stiched together from what my Grandfather taught me, what I read from Bala Ramayana books, Kannada ramayana poetry and some pieces of Sanskrit Valmiki Ramayana from Bala Khaanda (Vishwamitra blessing Rama Lakshmana dual with special arms).

Why Harmonium should be used in Yakshagana

All musical instruments have a 'type of sound' that make them sound different. This type of sound or quality of sound  is called Timbre. Human voice has a timbre too which is why two voices sound different. However, unlike instruments, it is possible to modulate human voice and change the timbre to a great extent. That is why we have mimicry: imitating others voices.

Yakshagana singing tries to change timbre of voice so that alaapa is close in timbre to Harmonium. Timbre of Pungi which was used earlier in Yakshagana is close to Harmonium if not the closest. Jogi pada still imitates Pungi drone to some extent! Both Harmonium and Pungi are reed instruments. Tanpura on the other hand is a stringed instrument with a completely different timbre. That is why some forms of music including Yakshagana that use reed instruments for drone sound different from those musical systems using Tanpura. It is also true that this is not the only reason why genres (zonra) of vocal musics sound different from others.

Musical harmony is created when frequency (pitch or note such as Sa {on a fixed scale}) and timbre of voice and drone (two notes) are closer (causing resonance - therefore beats). That is why we can not play one note on Tanpur(sa/pa) and other note on Harmonium (Sa) and use it as drone. Doing so creates a dissonance of timbre.

Classical singers mainly care about matching the frequency (pitch). However, more melodious singers also match the timbre of Tanpura. That is why they sound a bit artificial - precisely why Yakshagana sounds artificial as well where there is too much imitation of Harmonium timbre. You may note that Hindustani singers match the Tanpura timbre by widening their voice while Karnataka singers do it by using bit of nasal sound. 

I have been scratching my head on this since 3 years and have some insights. The summary of which is that resonance with reed instruments is the key to melodious and independent sound quality in Yakshagana singing. Therefore, I strongly believe we should use Harmonium as drone instrument in Yakshagana. We already use it but this is my understanding as to why we should continue to use it. The new drone instruments being designed are neither here nor there and are unfit to be used for singing. One of my friends called it a Transformer!!

Yuck Kidds

Indian media glorifies urban ignorance. There is no excuse, not even a bit. All of the English media is made up of urban people who do not even know there are forests and villages (They know slums by the way!). 'Villager' is a synonym for 'stupid' in many cities. A villager's kid is a 'Yuck'(disgust) for urban kids.

Sheela Bhat the editor of Rediff writes, "...
when urban India retired to bed after watching and surfing some 30 news channels,...We, urban Indians, came face-to-face with the 'real' India which was somewhere in those dark black hills known in Telugu as Nalla (dark/black) Mallai (hills)."

I can only laugh at her. So called urban people are not even 20% of India and they think 80% of India is stupid and these unawareness is an aberration! Why glorify their ignorance? So much cynicism is not good not just for their health but the health of India. Kids in cities call poor kids yuck (disgusting). I grewup with kids who were even nude;came to school with only nickker (shorts); shirts when they had any were torn by default. I was fortunate to be not one of them. They were never yuck. Parents never correct them. Region languages are languages to be spoken by house maids. English is "their own" language! The same urban people become powerful voices in urbane English media and drown all sane voices. Their benevolence is
of utmost important neither development nor well being of masses. Governments are solely elected to answer the media. They should first explain report and surrender to media before they 'work'.

These utterly unqualified gooofs rant their opinion and call it news while clearly they are out of touch with reality. Left untended we will see the likes of Burkha Dutta types and Karan Thapar types judging everything from nuclear physicists to below poverty line farmer as if they have all the wisdom and qualification. And what is it?:ignorance. There used to be column 'Opinion' in all the news reporting papers. Now we have opinion papers and I am still searching for 'Report' column!

In a conversation, an argument broke out that a plant can grow so many mtrs tall. An "expert" in the field related to plants who had never seen that plant in his life did some research and told me that it can not grow more than so many feet. I had to disagree for I had lived with them;played with them;slept on them;grew them and knew their medicinal properties. During the argument, where the Internet was clearly on "expert's" side and when I was already lacking a degree in Botany to claim any qualification, I said somewhere in the argument 'in my village and around' I can show you a bunch taller than you. Suddenly he said, "oh! you are from a village!" and my qualification suddenly went down by several university degrees in quantum physics.

We must stop this half educated pool of people that feels fit to judge anything and everyone. We must stop it before the insane and unrealistic voices take over and before moderate, realistic and genuine voices die.

Brahman is not GOD!

drvsacharya.blogspot.com's write on Zakir Naik's style made me think till late night. I helped myself get confused better. Going a step farward, I will help improve your confusion a little more. However, what I assure you is, this is not a mystic thing. If you think so at the end of reading (if you survive long enough!) either you have to read it again or I have to write this thing all over again, differently.

A lot of people are simply confused (like me) about Brahman and GOD (I am not talking about Brahmins;Iit is about Brahma). Solvation and Realization etc etc... We have plethora of philosophers and their friends (not forget their wives)
talking about these things. All of them have left me confused. But yesterday I had what I can call 'a clearer' understanding. Here is it's summary.

When we believe in God or in science or any other ideology or philosophy, we meerly shift from one doctrine to another. One of interpretations of Vedanta intends to explore beyond all these. The concept of Brahman is a result of such an attemp. I liked how Dr V S Acharya put it: "unconditioned consciousness". Assume a state where there is absolutely, completely no conditioning, that is Brahman. Consider very physical conditioning that all animals or anything must go through such as being in womb, birth etc to bare minimum animal conditioning and other social conditioning at the higher level such as relations and philosophies. If something can exist without indoctrination, conditioning or prejudice that is Brahman; not GOD. There is no believing because there is only realization that there could be such a state. It can not be preached for it would become another philosophy or discipline like science or religion. It must be expored by individuals and realized in according to or as much their intellect allows them to.
Atman (mistranslated as soul) could be an ego centric perspective of Brahman and therefore not attached to body but there is a sense of self because it is a individual pespective that is not common to all. Liberation therefore is liberation from conditioning.

There is no rebirth. There is no soul. There is no creater. Brahman is not GOD but meerly unconditioned consciousness. Some call it The Truth. Whatever it is, not GOD!

*You may like to read Douglas Hofstadter's, I Am a Strange Loop (first 100 pages are horrible and the book is full of ideosyncratic phrases - tough read). This book is a scientist's attempt to understand Self.

**This explanation is my understanding. This may be close to Ramana Maharshi's interpretation. Shankara's interpretation however seems to believe in rebirth (Remember: Punarapi jananam Punarapi maranam punarapi janani jatare shayanam...).

Chabla - Chande and Tabla Dagga

(Please tune your ears! Nothing is in tune with everything :) Use a headset for Thavil's sake. Your laptop speakers suck! Ya they Do. If You did not know then you do not know. Most crappy headsets do a better job.

Thavil combines inkless (ink=black stuff at centre[1]) drum head percussion with some bass on left side with a bigger drum head. But the tonal quality of Thavil left head is not so impressive compared to Yakshagana Chande. Also Chande has high pitch with slightly better tonal quality. Tabla dagga has one of the best bass quality for all kinds of drums. Tabla dagga is obiviously better than Thavil right head bass [-1000]. So why not combine them: Chande and Tabla? We can clearly hear better boss in the video. Better tone of the Chande is not obvious. Take my words for it! And forgive my voice.... yet, doesnt this sound a bit like Mrudangum with missing pure tone (No! Mrudangum is not a new type of Gum. Is a drum.) Note this drum combination is unique in that the bass drum has the ink and tonal drum head has none (exact opposite to what is usual) creating unique sound of pure bass and not so tonal left head.



[-1000] I have tried to offend Karnataka music guys less. They have a habit of getting offended too much; not my problem. They care more for Karnataka music (Sorry Rajaji*) than for music.

[1] The black stuff or the ink or the KarNe in Kannada is placed at the centre of drum head to kill all overtones not multiple of the fundamental. This makes the tone produced perfectly hormonic when tuned perfectly. It is another matter that Mrudanga guys changed perfectly hormonic head (Pakhavaj) by pushing outer layer closer to central ink there by changing the vibration modes of the streched membrane. That is why CV Raman choose Tabla instead of Mrudanga for his study ( click on it you.. lazy ... ). Note, I like Karnataka Sangeetha. This was only to keep it light. Do not be offended. By the by, the very change makes Mrudanga what it is by adding some seductive overtones, turning the hot Pakhavaj into a sexy gum. Mrudanga also produces wrable (Janyyeeee sound). On the other hand Dagga has shifted ink to produce tonal but some other overtones making it the most sexy bass.

Evolution need not be in conflict with creation stories

I do not think one needs to be an atheist to believe in Evolution or Science. Believing in GOD is different from believing that there is GOD! Science says "It is highly improbable that there is GOD". Thus they find it acceptable to be Agnostic or Atheistic.

I believe in science and therefore in Evolution. I DO NOT believe in creation. Creationism is a dishonest argument to say the list, i.e to believe today that it is true is self betrayal. When I say that, I see harmony not conflict: it was an attempt by our ancestors to understand and explain the beginning of the universe and life. It is in all traditions and they are fascinating. Newton is only outdated after we have better understanding of Einstein's theory. That in no way diminishes Newton's contributions.

The creation stories are a way to appreciate our ancestors genuine attempts to explain and we have to enjoy the stories. We have to like the superb use of language and poetry in it ("...Let there be light. Then there was light"...). To say that today, they are right would insult our ancestors genuine attempts of reasoning. Continuing the same spirit we have evolution today. Tomorrow we may find a better answer. Let us hope we will.

Features of Yakshagana

This is in response to Yakshagana Kuchupudi Jugalbandi:

Thank you for the video. This is an interesting experiment with Yakshagana. However, it is very difficult to call

this Yakshagana. Vidwan Bhat's singing clearly misses the key features of Bhagavathike. I list them below

1) Sharp decay in end notes (Attack,Line and Decay are three prominent features of a note).

2) Unique hormony with the Yakshagana drone designed to bring the tone from as below as abdomen to give a special texture to notes (Yakshagana used Pungi of the Snake Charmers (Haavadigaru) as drone drone initially before using Harmonium. Tamburi should not be used as it does not suite the note characters (timbre) of Yakshagana singing)

3) Yakshagana singing has its own note inflections (You may call it Gamaka or whatever) which is conspicuously missing in Vidwan's Baagavathike. They are unique Yakshagana and in fact what makes Yakshagana singing different from other forms.

4) Yakshagana has its own Rekhe (body line). Mantapa is imitating Bharathanatya. Yakshagana is an independent form separate from other traditional ones following Natya Shastra although it has all the sections metioned in the Shastra (almost none have all parts). Shivarama Karantha explains this in "Yakshagana Bayalata".
(Tangentially, There are evidences to show that the father of Kuchupudi Siddhendra Yogi was trained in Udupi Mata under the name Siddappa/Sidda who went to Andhra later on [1]).

5) Mantapas costumes look good but deviate significantly from tradition and borrow from other forms.

If this is deliberate both Ganesh and Mantapa owe an explanation to Yakshagana fans and why this is being done. Shivarama Karantha when introducing his version ensured that the features of Yakshagana are not touched except removing dialogs to make it language independent. He only added few features without diluting existing ones. But as I said, experiments are welcome, but I only hope they know what they are doing.

Is religion like food!?

Yes! If we grew up eating burgers, we will come back to it and will like it always. If we ate Dose/Idli, we will go find a South Indian restaurant like I did here! If we are the followers of some Y ism, more likely we will remain one: more or less! I mean more when we are older and less when we are younger! Faith can get weaker or stronger but will remain.

Then you have some varieties. You grow up disliking carrots, say. Then you end up never liking. We might never come back and like it. Some like Ambedkar dislike and change religion(Buddhism) because they grew up not liking something (Hindu). Some like Periyar are just happy blaming Brahmins for all evils: they become atheists or whatever they call themselves not fascists. That is because Brahmins are not Jews!

How does it matter? Or why should it? At least they are thinking. Thinking they are, changing their faiths and feeling good. Like food we eat growing up, we like and dislike faiths. Do not tell me some are intellectuals. They are a bit more conscious that is all!

Enough is enough

Enough is enough in a totally different sense. When we posses enough to meet our needs we are most happiest. When we possesses even a little more we start seeing problems. We all know the problems of not having enough.

When we have more than enough money, it comes at the cost of time. We do not have "time" to have fun with what we earn. When we have more than enough utensils Per Se we have to wash them too! When we have lots of furniture we have less space! And when we have a bigger house do you come help me clean it? Or will you pay the rent or mortgage or whatever? If not again I have to start working more to pay off loans. That's is why I said. Enough is enough.

By its side remember some smart people are fast. They can save time and earn more. Then it is like going to where you are supposed to on time, or before! We miss things by the side of the road. Now, this is not life! This is yet another blog post that is all. Have a nice whatever!

Why is media mostly liberal biased?

Seemingly complicated question! Or is it like asking why people are liberal? No, much simpler answer can satisfy us, I assure you. When media is a business and news is sold, it can only do that helps its business: promote sale! Of what? Does not matter! This does answer the question we begun with. I will tell you how.

Collectivism simply reduces number of consumers or end users. At the heart of liberalism lies self. Promote self interest, you get individualism. No further explanation is needed to understand how this helps consumerism. Lo, you get a media that simply promotes consumerism in the name of liberalism.

What is the outcome? Same! The make believe media is just another arm of crony capitalism. Middle and poor class become slaves of the more "Enterprising". Take a few out from and add a few to this class and that class; people change; things do not change. "Enterprising" is a relative term. Not that you are not smart, but that it is fair then to charge you for someone else being smarter. Isn't that what our ancestors called cheating? Some names change, things wont! What was your name yesterday?

If you are in to poetical metre stuff (Chandas), observe that all even and odd lines have equal time syllables (Akshara maatre). He are some details.

Here is a prasthara for Palla (First stanza)
6 + 6 + 4 = 16 (so obviously fits 16 beat Teen Taal)
4 + 5 = 9 (so strench the last syllable for 7 maatre)
6 + 2+4+4 = 16
4+5 = 9 (so strench the last syllable for 7 maatre)

tire tube and the spoon

Low life found its bicycle punxured esterdie. Filled some blow. What a rip off! 50 cents for a tube full of air and when you know it is going back to where it came from! It did. All the tools I had to fix were a few forks and an old glue! I thought I was smart. Patched(2) the tubes. Put the tire back only to find one of them chose to let some air out!

Thus begins my journey to Canadian Tire. Bought a tire a tube some nuts and a wrench. I had my spoons in the bag. Replaced the front tire and rear tube right there! Fixed the seat and my bike is ready for this summer! I still have 2 nuts to spare. Let me know if yours is loose!

Latent Managers

Who shaves the barber? The refrain in this post is going to be:

"everything needs to be managed and the manager and the managed can not be both at the same time."

If this sounds obvious, well, it isn't! Labourers out there, forget about contracts, projects or assignments and think about 'living' a bit. I will explain why all decent looking things have a manager on top and why life is not an exception.

Parasitic growth of embryo/foetus is managed by womb. Babies are managed by their mothers. Childhood is managed by parents and caring neighbourhood; our education by teachers and school. The work we do my managers and the managers by their managers and so on.

What it is that we do that goes unmanaged? Depending on our choice, marriage is a stuff that can go unmanaged if we by any chance believe we are on top of it! Parents and relatives have tended to manage marriage. If we chose to believe that we can manage our own marriage we will be successful as much a barber trying to dress his hair himself. If you are wondering what else is managed? Until and after our death not only cremation is managed by the last and the 16th ritual but also memories, by the anual day of ancestors.

With the increased ecomonic activity and independece, being humble is more difficult. Some never get to feel the need for such a 'behaviour'. Arrogance when directed at some latent managers of our lives will harm and we wont even know we are our enemies!

The Indian media on "payroll"

The Indian media has been successfull in confusing the audience completely. What is important to citizens is that Election Commision remains unbiased and independent and not if X is its head or Y is its head. What is important is whether accusations are correct.

Chawla having been indicted by Shah report is no holy saint and at least is a questionable character while Gopalaswami has no such precedence. What matters to me is if the accusations are right and if so we want an impartial person head Election Commission save India's democracy. It is clearly evident from Congress stand and BJPs accusations that Chawla is "wanted" by Congress! Pleople want to know WHY?

People also want to know whether CNN-IBN and NDTV are on Congress' payroll? Why do we not see an investigation of the Mangalore pub kind? Why do we not see story that is most important: is Chawla the would be CEC honest? Article 324(5) on the other hand is not written in Greek and we do not need CNN-IBN/NDTV type interpretation!

Why prosperity is problem

Yes, prosperity not just can be but is always a problem for the those who are nor prosperous! Imagine this scenario:
Instead of much of India, whole of India with an exception of very few services were to be engaged in agriculture, income disparity would much be much less. In other words becasue a select few can not affoard to buy just becasue they can; this would not let inflation raise making life much easier for the rest of the consumers. I will not elaborate.

Individuolis Liberosis

Alcohol is the biggest cause for road accidents and biggest health concern all over the world. Let us not mistake condemning attack on some innocent people and supporting alcoholism. We should not let people take law into their hands, but that does not mean that we should promote smoking, drugs and alcohol. What attack on women are we talking about? This is an elite issue: problem for women who can afford imported liquor.

Millions of women and men starve without water. Why do media not pay attention? Thousands of women are being trafficked and being sent to dance bars why is media silent? Disproportionate attention on incidents like this and not caring for majority women issues is a sign of elitism in Indian media. Where is the Gandhian principle now? Media shouts on oct 2 that this nation is forgetting Gandhi? Did Gandhi ask everyone to booze and snooze?

Media and any responsible individuals should encourage youth to participate in more intellectually satisfying activities such as sports, music science and many more. Freedom does not mean girls and boys should drink. Criminals are arrested anyway. The bleeding heart secularists and irresponsible politicians are not only sensationalising this but have thrown all journalistic principles and codes of conduct to air by broadcasting opinionated news and liberal biased blaberation. Responsible youth should emerge smart and clearly distinguish the uncalled for act of criminals and be careful not to support pub culture that will eventually damage human resource of our country by drowning them in brainless indulgence. Most "social workers" and "media" sound like they are on rich people's payroll. It is time we wake up and bring some sense to these half baked activists (so called activists will help themselves if they read little history outside what they studied in their textbooks).

A few living in the cities are up with propaganda and are casuing long term damage. U R Ananthamurthy said terror laws should be applied. If there was ever a need to apply terror laws it is against this guy UR Ananthamoorka. It is a shame that he is a Kannada writer. Oppurtunists like him speak and decent people have to listen to him what a shame! Why has drinking and drugs become Indian culture and that too a progressive one at that? I want to listen some people with some common sense talk about this. Liberals do not even have kidneys forget brain!

Re-Pub-Lick day

A nude modelling of liberal bias is at display in the form of Indian media. An incidence is being touted as display of intolerance. They are worried that it is getting hard for women to go to pubs.

She is busy worrying about women who can not drink alcohol. What about women without water? What about women without primary health care?

Here, to them, women means females those who have purse to buy imported alcohol. Media is portraing it as "national outrage". I did not see any neighbours being interviewed the problem these pubs causing them. Alleged use of drug (illegal) I do not hear anybody talk about it! Progressive? NDTV said "Nation is shocked"? I do not think so.

Crappy incompetent reporting? Standing and talking stuff? My 3 year old nephew talks better. What kind journalism is this? So, even when culprits are already in jail? Such fools as these have no wit to understand the problem. Only punishing some guys is not going to solve the problem.

Satyam -on why it is not a big deal!

A strange negative psychology grips India. Trouble or Crisis? Blame, talk, punish and forget! Crisis is a problem. First reaction should be to understand how it happend. Second, solve the problem at hand. Third, document and learn lessons reform regulation to prevent such crisis. But here, so much of energy is wasted in punishing, trouble mongering and finally contributing to worsening the situation.

Satyam is an institution. It has created value. It still has business. It is not even under loss! Where is the trouble? Interest of the short term investors? If we worry only about these gamblers, who will worry about sustaining our nations institutinos that have given direction oppurtunity and goal to youth, created intellectual property and provided job. Does a short term investor think it is easy to build an organisation like Satyam? What is wrong with all the people including media? Media asked, "will Satyam survive?". What a joke. Media is asking if a profit making firm will survive!

Just do not bother about the investors for a while. They are gamblers anyway. Let Satyam get stable. It is not bankrupt. Where will the money go no where! Wait and the stock prices will be up again. Instead, everyone is up to kill it. Even its competitors: Wipro, Infosys, TCS. Few such institutions will create monopoly. We need more such institutions. We need to stop monsters eating institution so competition survives, IP lives longer and gives direction to skills and energy of the human resource to take our society forward.

ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳಿವೆ? ಆಡುಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗುವ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳು ಬೇರೆಯೆ? ಅವು ಯಾವ್ವು ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈ ತು೦ಡು ಬರಹದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಚಾರ ಮಾಡುವಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಆಳವಾದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತದರ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವಿಲ್ಲದ್ದರಿ೦ದ, ಇದು ಸ್ವ೦ತ ಅನಭವಕ್ಕೆಬ೦ದ, ಯೋಚನೆಗೆ ನಿಲುಕಿದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಸ೦ಕಲನವಷ್ಟೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಆಡುಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳು ವಸ್ತುವಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಸ೦ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಬೇರೆಯ ವಿಚಾರ [೧]. ಇದಕ್ಕೊ೦ದು ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಇದೆ. ೯೭-೯೮ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಕಳದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಡೆದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೆಳನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾ ನಡಹಳ್ಳಿ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ರ೦ಗನಾಥ ಶರ್ಮರು, ಸೇಡಿಯಾಪು ಕೄಷ್ಣಭಟ್ಟರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ, "ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ೦ಚಮೀ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಇದೆಯೆ?" ಎ೦ದೊ೦ದಿಷ್ಟು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು. ಶರ್ಮರ ಕನ್ನಡವ್ಯಾಕರಣವನ್ನು ಕುರಿತಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕವ್ಯಾವವೂ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಭಟ್ಟರ ಕನ್ನಡ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಿಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿ೦ದ ತಪ್ಪೆನಿಸಿದರೆ ತಿಳಿದವರು ಸರಿಮಾಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಖುಷಿಪಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದರೀತ್ಯಾ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ೭ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳಿವೆ:


ಉ,ಅನ್ನು,ಇ೦ದ,ಗೆ-ಇಗೆ-ಅಕ್ಕೆ-ಕ್ಕೆ,ದೆಸೆಯಿ೦ದ, ಅ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ, ಏ-ಈ-ರಾ-ಆ-ಇ.


ಉದಾ:
ರಾಮನು, ರಾಮನನ್ನು,ರಾಮನಿ೦ದ,ರಾಮನಿಗೆ,ರಾಮನದೆಸೆಯಿ೦ದ, ರಾಮನ,ರಾಮನಲ್ಲಿ.


ನಾಮಪದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎರುಡು ಭಾಗವಿದೆ ಎ೦ದು ನೆನಪು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳೋಣ: ಪ್ರಕೄತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ "ರಾಮ" ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ. ಆಡುಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಇವೆ. ಯಾಕಿಲ್ಲ? ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಆಡುಗನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ. "ನಸುಕಿನಾಗೆ ಎದ್ದೆ" "ರಾಮನ್ನ ಕರೆ" "ರಾಮ೦ದು ಬಿಲ್ಲು". ಇಲ್ಲಿ "ನಸುಕಿನಾಗೆ" ನಾಮಪದದಲ್ಲಿ "ಅಗೆ" ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ ಸವರ್ಣಧೀರ್ಘವಾಗಿ ಕೂಡಿದೆ. "ಅಲ್ಲಿ" ಸಪ್ತಮಿಯ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯದ ಬದಲು "ಅಗೆ" ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. "ರಾಮನ್ನ" ಉಪಯೋಗ "ರಾಮನನ್ನು" ದ ಅಪರರೂಪ. "ಅನ್ನು" ದ್ವಿತೀಯದ ಬದಲು "ಅನ್ನ" ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯದ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. "ರಾಮ೦ದು" ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಪ್ರತ್ಯವೇನು ಇಲ್ಲ. "ಅದು ರಾಮನ" ಅಪರರೂಪ "ರಾಮನದು". ಆದ್ದರಿ೦ದ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಷಷ್ಟಿ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿಯ "ಅ" ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ (ರಾಮನ). "ರಾಮ೦ದು" ಎನ್ನುವಲ್ಲಿ ಆಡುಮಾತಿನ ಅನುಸ್ವಾರ ಬ೦ದಿದೆ ಅಷ್ಟೆ (ಅದು ಬದಲು ಅ೦ದು).

ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯವೇನೆ೦ದರೆ, ಆಡುಗನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ಸಪ್ತಮೀ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿಗಳ "ಅಗೆ" ಮತ್ತು "ಅನ್ನ" ಎ೦ಬೆರಡು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಗಳನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ನನಗೆ ಗುರುತಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪುರುಸೊತ್ತಿರುವವರು ಸ೦ಶೋಧನೆಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನೇ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುವ ಕಣ್ಮಣಿಗಳು ಭ೦ಡಕಾವ್ಯ ಷ೦ಢಕಾವ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಈಕಡೆಗೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗಮನ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು. ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಇವುಗಳ ಸೇರ್ಪಡೆಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಗೆಯವಿನ್ನಿದ್ದರೆ ಪುರುಸೊತ್ತಾದಾಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬ೦ದು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ನೀವೂ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಸಿಗೋಣ.

ರಾಗ್ಯ ಕಟ್ಟಿನಕೆರೆ (ಗೂಗ್ಯನ ಪ್ರೆ೦ಡು)

[೧] ಉದಾ: "ನಾನು ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿದೆ". ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟ ನಾಮಪದದೋಡನೆ "ಅನ್ನು" ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ ಬಳಕೆ ಯಾಗಬೇಕಿತ್ತು:"ನಾನು ಊಟವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದೆ" ಸರಿ. ಊಟವನ್ನು ಮಾಡದೇ "ಊಟದಿ೦ದಲೋ", "ಊಟದಲ್ಲೋ" ಮಾಡಲು ಬರದ್ದರಿ೦ದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ ಅನಗತ್ಯ! ಇದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯೇ. ಇದು ಹಲವೆಡೆ ಇ೦ಗ್ಲಿಷಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ೦ಖ್ಯಾವಾಚಕಗಳು (articles) ಅನಗತ್ಯವಾದ೦ತೆ.

who works for whom?

Time, cosier as it gets, makes people forget "who is who". Like, HR manager forgets that he is hired to make sure developer is productive. Like, receptionist forgets that s/he is hired to receive people who visit developers and managers. Like, sales executive forgets that they sell what developers produce. Finally, developer forgets that s/he makes a living because others sell, or work for success of what s/he develops or tests.

Then come tougher times, like the one now as if to remind who is who!

When time is not right, we have to take up time's job of reminding people WHO they are. This is called turning the table around. Why? Because often we find ourselves on the wrong side of it!

Eka Tala - why is it so?

In short, Ek Taal is what is you hear when you hear folk drums on streets of Bengaluru. Be it a death procession or a celebration. How do I know? While dancing today in the shower to Yakshagana Ek taal rhythm I realised it was same as the folk grove! It indeed is. A typical 6 beat grove with a single emphatic stroke. Something like, "taak taak taaku --- tataika daaku". In yakshagana this is decently used as, "tai ta ta di na dhim taam" a variation of "taiku ta dhem taam" (ta and dhem have 2 time units).

In Karnataka sangeetha however, they do not know! They have screwed it so much that I almost hate musicologists. For them Ek taal is 4 beats. Go figure out. They agree with one thing it has only one group (Laghu), which makes it a lot more flexible grove.

In Hindustani, it has 12 beats which is understandable a mere multiple of six. But unfortunately has more emphatic strokes. They have messed it up a little too, although they still use the same name! They have no clue what the 'one' in Ek taal suggests!

In short Ek taal is actually a very obvious and natural folk grove that musicologists and musicians alike have altered to feel good and call it a classical grove. While everything has folk origin, this one is still alive and provable. What makes it more enjoyable is that when I shower next time I know better about what I am dancing to!

PS: I got this all wrong and Ek tala Tatkara is - Ta Dhim Dhimita Dhim 4 beats. Very close to Hindustani Ek Taal in Yakshagana is Rupak Tala (Vilambita - 12 beats) which is discussed in this post instead of Ek Tala by error. Eka Tala is discussed including this error in another post in detail.
